A new door handle set and a flat-head screwdriver are all you need to replace a door handle or door knob. Whether it's to repair a worn-out door knob or to improve the appearance of a door with a new handle, replacing an existing handle is usually a simple process. Choose a new door handle set from a hardware store or home improvement centre that you prefer, and prepare your screwdriver. The following are the important points:

1. Find a replacement door handle that fits your door.

2. Insert the latch of the new handle into the hole on the inside edge of the door.

3. The inner plates of the new handle should be screwed to the door.

1. Find a replacement door handle that fits your door.

To determine the backset, use a tape measure to measure from the inner border of the door to the centre of the hole in the door, then select a handle that fits this backset. Choose a new handle or knob with cover plates that are the same shape and size as the old ones to hide any marks on your door's surface caused by the old plates, such as screw holes and scratches.

l Most door handles have a standard backset of 60 mm or 70 mm, so you should have no trouble finding one that fits in the existing holes.

l If your old door handle had rectangular cover plates, for example, it's probably advisable to stick with a new handle that has identical rectangular cover plates instead of converting to one with round plates.

2. Insert the latch of the new handle into the hole on the inside edge of the door.

Place the latch in the hole on the inside edge of the door so that the smooth angled section of the latch faces the same way as the door closes. In the old latch recess, slide the latch mechanism into the hole until the latch plate rests flush against the inside edge of the door.

l Because door handle latches are conventional sizes, the new latch should easily fit into the existing recess. If it doesn't seem to fit for any reason, you can alter the depth and form of the recess in the door with a chisel.

3. The inner plates of the new handle should be screwed to the door.

Slide the inner plates into position by aligning the cylinders on the insides of the inner plates with the corresponding holes in the latch mechanism. Using the included screws and your screwdriver, secure the plates flush against the door.

l If the inner plates differ, make sure to read the directions on your new handle to figure out which goes on the inside and which goes on the exterior of the door.
