A combination lock is useful for keeping your school locker, gym locker, bike, or anything else safe and secure. Opening a combination lock is simple once you know your combination—just a few rotations to the left and right, and the lock is open! Simply follow these steps to learn how to open a combination lock. Here are three methods:

1. Buying your combination lock

2. Opening the combination lock

3. Locking the combination lock

1. Buying your combination lock

Invest in a combination lock. combination locks are available at most hardware, home improvement, and sporting goods stores in the United States. The Home Depot, Lowes, Sears, Modell's, Staples, and Walmart are some of the stores that sell combination locks.

On the back of the lock, there is a sticker with the combination. Your new combination lock will most likely come with a sticker on the rear of the lock that will tell you the combination. Carefully remove the sticker. You don't want to keep the sticker around in case someone else sees it and realizes it's the combination to a lock, so write down the combination and toss it out. Begin to remember your new locker combination. This will make it easy for you to open the lock regularly.

2. Opening the combination lock

Turn the lock's dial three times clockwise. Make a right turn on the dial. This clears and resets the lock, making it ready to open. When the marker reaches the first number in the combination, turn off the wheel. The top of the dial should have a marking or line pointing to the twelve o'clock position. It will most likely be red. Because the first number in the combination for this lock is 36, you should stop turning the dial when the marker reaches that number. Return the dial one full turn to the left. Spin it one full revolution counterclockwise, past the first number, then stop at the second number. Make a right turn on the dial. Finally, turn the dial clockwise and stop at the sticker's last number. Remove the key from the lock. Pull up on the top shackle of the lock, and it should pop open. You can also pull the lockdown by holding on to the shackle. If it still won't open, start over from the beginning. You should clean out the lock after partially engaging the tumblers before trying again.

3. Locking the combination lock

Place the shackle in place. Turn the shackle so that the opened portion is above the hole and press it into the top of the lock's aperture. Turn the knob. Turn the dial three times in any direction. It makes no difference where you stop. The tumblers will be disengaged as a result of this operation, and you will have to start over with the first number if you wish to open it.

Put it to the test. Pull-on the lock or shackle to make sure it's locked. If it unlocks, close it and lock it again.
