The interior mechanism of a lock is called a lock cylinder. Interchangeable lock cylinders are commonly found in residential and office doors, whereas storefront lock cylinders are commonly seen in retail and commercial doors. In most automobiles, lock cylinders can also be located in the ignition. You'll almost certainly have to replace the lock cylinder if you wish to change the key in your lock. Fortunately, if you have the correct equipment and follow the right methods, it may be simple. Here are the main points:
1. Under the latch, remove the flat screw.
2. Turn the key in a quarter turn.
3. While pulling on the key, push on the other side of the lock.
4. Slide the new cylinder into the hole after turning the key.
5. Replace the flat screw with a new one.
6. Make sure your key unlocks your door by testing it.
7. Remove the faceplate from the latch by unscrewing it and removing it.
As you change the lock, prop the door open. Remove the screw under the door latch by turning it counterclockwise with a flathead screwdriver. Because you'll have to screw it back in later, put the screw somewhere safe.
Insert the key into the keyhole and rotate it slightly to the open position. This will conceal the latch within the lock's internal components, allowing you to slip it out. You won't be able to pull the lockout if you don't turn the key.
While pushing on the lock from the other side of the door, keep the key turned. The interchangeable lock cylinder should come out if everything is done correctly. Try rotating the key a little more or less if the cylinder feels stuck. Adjust the key until the latch can be pushed out.
To get the latch to go into the lock cylinder, turn the key counterclockwise a quarter of the way open. This will make it much easier to re-insert it into the cylinder hole.
With your fingers, thread the screw into the hole, then tighten it with a flathead screwdriver. Continue twisting it until the side of your door is flat with it. The lock cylinder will be held in place by the flat screw.
As you test the door, keep it open. If that doesn't work, disassemble and reinstall the lock cylinder, or contact a locksmith to see if they can replace it for you.
While you're working, prop the door open with a doorstop. Remove all the screws in the faceplate on the narrow part of the door with a Phillips head screwdriver. Remove the faceplate from the door after the screws have been removed. [7] Keep the screws in a sealed bag so they don't get lost.
