Two Different Types of Locks: Mortise vs. Tubular locks

Size and function are two major differences between mortise and tubular locks. Furthermore, each lock assembly type is made up of different pieces in order to distinguish them. The pocket carved into the door where the lock is installed is referred to as a mortise. As a result, a mortise lockset cannot be used on any door. They're ideal for replacing the hardware on properties constructed before 1950. They can be used on new doors, but they require particular preparation.

The following items are commonly seen in mortise assemblies:

• The body should be locked (the part installed inside the mortise cut-out in the door)

• Lock trim comes in a variety of designs for knobs, levers, and handle sets.

• The strike plate is a metal plate that is affixed to the door jamb and has a hole for the lock's bolt to slip into, keeping the door closed.

• The lock body's locking and unlocking capabilities are controlled by a skeleton key.

Tubular locks are widespread on all sorts of doors and are especially well suited to new pre-drilled doors (post-1950). tubular locks contain a spindle assembly that extends into or through the latch's centre, allowing the latch bolt to retract when the lever or knob is rotated.

The keyway of tubular locks has a ring-shaped hole in the middle. A solid metal cylinder is inserted in the centre of this circular opening. Six to eight pins are located between the cylinder and the keyway hole. tubular locks, in a way, encapsulate the bolt within a tube. Driver pins and springs, as well as tubular lock pins, are held in place by plugs that rest in the cylinder. Tubular locks commonly feature six to eight pins, but they can have as few as four or as many as ten.

A round key with an open centre is put into the lock to make it operate. Rectangular notches carved onto the key's edges correspond to plugs of the same shape. Each notch depresses an individual pin to a specific height when correctly inserted. The lock cylinder can now freely turn as a result of this. Tubular pin tumbler locks have pins that move horizontally when pushed, whereas traditional pin tumbler locks have pins that move vertically when pushed.
