How to Replace a Door Handle?

A new door handle set and a flat-head screwdriver are all you need to replace a door handle or door knob. Whether it's to repair a worn-out door knob or to improve the appearance of a door with a new handle, replacing an existing handle is usually a simple process. Choose a new door handle set from a hardware store or home improvement centre that you prefer, and prepare your screwdriver. The following are the important points:

1. On top of the inner plates, install the cover plates.

2. Install the replacement knobs or handles by pressing them into position.

3. If you want the other locks and deadbolts on the door to match, replace them.

Place the new cover plates on top of the inner plates and press them down until they snap into place. Using your screwdriver, secure any given screws that hold the plates in place.

· Because these are only aesthetic plates that cover the inner plates, they should be the same on both sides.

2. Install the replacement knobs or handles by pressing them into position.

Slide the outer knob or handle onto the cylinder on the exterior of the door's handle mechanism and squeeze it in place until it snaps into place. Carry out the same procedure with the inner knob or handle.

• Keep in mind that some knobs and handles are attached with screws. Screw the knobs or handles on instead of forcing them into place if the door handle mechanism cylinders have threads.

• You don't have to put your new door handles on individually if they're already linked to the cover plates. After you've attached the new cover plates to the door, they'll already be in place.

3. If you want the other locks and deadbolts on the door to match, replace them.

To refresh the appearance of all the hardware on the door, choose new locks and deadbolts that match your door handle. To finish upgrading the door's hardware, unscrew and remove the old locks and deadbolts, then slide the new ones into place on the door and secure them with the provided screws.

• This is completely optional and only matters if the new handle stands out significantly from the rest of the door hardware.

• For instance, if your front door has a silver deadbolt lock and you just replaced the old handle with a new silver handle, the difference might not be obvious. If your new handle is gold, however, you may wish to replace the locks.
