How to Install a Lock to a Desk Drawer

If you want to keep personal goods, financial records, or other types of private information in your desk drawer, adding a drawer lock is an excellent option. What you keep in a lockable desk drawer should be carefully chosen. A surface lock is the simplest lock to purchase and install. You'll have a lockable desk drawer if you carefully follow a few procedures. This article is going to introduce each step.

Step 1

Examine the drawer on the desk. Check to see if the drawer face is sturdy and robust enough to hold the surface lock in place. The thickness of the drawer front should be measured. Make sure the area where you wish to attach the lock is at least 1/2-inch thick.

Step 2

Examine the top frame against which the drawer closes. Make sure the component that contacts the drawer as it closes is at least 1/2-inch thick—the thicker, the better. Ensure that the portion that will hold the locking bolt receptacle is thick enough to provide a firm, solid locking grip.

Step 3

Locate the lock on the drawer's face. Find the drawer's central point. Measure the whole width of the drawer's face. To locate the central point, divide the total number of inches by two. The middle point, for example, is 7 1/2 inches broad if the drawer face is 15 inches wide. Plan on putting the lock in the middle, small deviations will result in failure to install the drawer locks.

Step 4

Hold the lock against the face of the drawer where you want to install it. Outline the screw holes on the front, top centre of the drawer front, with a pencil.

Step 5

Make a mark in the drawer frame for the exact location of the matching bolt receptacle. Make certain they're drawn in and matched up perfectly. These two parts, the lock assembly and the bolt receptacle, must not be misaligned. If the alignment is incorrect, the lock will not function properly.

Step 6

Use a drill and a wood drill bit with a diameter that is slightly smaller than the screws that will hold the lock in place. Drill the two holes that will hold the mounting screws with care. Place the lock on the drawer and use the screws to secure it in place.
