Examine the space between your door's unhinged side and the frame. Your door may not be closing properly if there is a wide gap between the door and the frame. Rather than replacing the door with a wider one, you can remedy the problem by changing the hinges. If the gap on the unhinged side of your door is simply at the top or bottom, you'll only need to adjust the hinge that's level with the gap.
Here are the main points:
1. Remove your door's bottom door hinge.
2. Remove the hinge plate's traced contours.
3. Replace the bottom hinge over the cardboard cutouts and tighten it.
4. Remove the top door hinge and place the other two cardboard cutouts in their place.
Unscrew each screw on the door hinge using a screwdriver. Use a drill for more difficult screws. Trace half of the hinge four times on a tiny piece of cardboard. Place the hinge on a flat surface so that half of it is on the cardboard (one of the hinge plates with screw holes). With a pencil, trace the hinge's outline onto the cardboard. Rep on the other three cardboard sections.
You simply need to trace the hinge twice on the cardboard if you're only changing one of your door's hinges.
If you're modifying more than two hinges on your door, you'll need to trace two extra outlines for each hinge.
Use scissors or a box cutter to cut the paper. Ensure that your cuts are as precise as possible. The cardboard pieces will be placed beneath the door's hinge, and if they're too big or small, they won't fit properly. In the mortises on the door and jamb, place two of the cardboard cutouts. The hinge plates rest in the mortises, which are indents on the door and jamb. In the indents, the cardboard cutouts should fit exactly.
Underneath the hinge plates, drive the screws straight through the cardboard cutouts. To ensure that the hinge is secure, tighten the screws all the way. You shouldn't be able to see the cardboard once you've completed it.
Then, just like the bottom hinge, screw the top door hinge back in place over the cardboard. The space between your door and the frame should be narrower now that both door hinges are slightly lifted by the cardboard pieces.
If your door has more than two hinges that need to be adjusted, detach those hinges and replace them with the cardboard pieces you cut out.
If the gap is still too big, add more cardboard cutouts. Remove the hinges once more and place extra cardboard behind them. To overcome the problem, you may need to use many pieces of cardboard for each hinge.
